How You Can Help Your Case

1. Tell your attorney the whole story.
You must be completely honest with your attorney. Your attorney's job is to help you and he is not allowed to tell anybody what you have told him without your permission. If you have lied to him, he may have taken action on your behalf which will be impossible to correct when the truth comes out. Your attorney needs to know the whole truth so he can represent your best interests without being surprised later, after it's too late to change strategy.

2. Don't Talk About Your Case.
Do not talk to potential witnesses. Do not try to justify yourself to anyone. Your friends don't need to hear it and people who think you are guilty won't believe it. The only person you should communicate with about your case is your attorney.

3. If you are in a pre-trial detention center.
Be aware that telephone calls at the jail are monitored and often recorded. Be aware that your incoming and outgoing mail may be opened and read. Be aware that if you tell another inmate about your case or confess, that inmate may agree to testify against you at trial where he will tell the jury what you told him in exchange for leniency from the state. There is no such thing as privacy at the jail. Protect yourself by discussing your case with no one besides your attorney.
