Personal
Injury
If you've
been injured through someone else's fault or negligence, the
question of whether you need an attorney is one you are sure
to ponder. Don't assume you know the answer until you speak
with an attorney about the facts specific to your case.
While
it is difficult to assess the value of any case based on generalizations,
here are some important questions to consider regarding your
personal injury claim:
Have
you missed work or lost the ability to earn a living?
If you are unable to make a living because of an injury you
have suffered, the party who caused your injury may be responsible
for your lost wages. Replacing lost wages and paying bills
resulting from an accident are two of the primary objectives
for a lawyer when your injuries are preventing you from working.
Did
your injury require medical attention?
If you were treated for your injuries, there's a good chance
you will end up owing a hospital or doctor significant bills
for the care you received. These expenses are not always covered
by your health insurance. A Personal Injury Attorney can help
you reduce these bills or help make sure the person responsible
for your injury pays them.
Did
you cause your injury in any way?
In some cases, an injured person may have contributed to their
own injury in some way. Even in these cases the party partly
responsible for your injury may be required to pay their fair
share of your damages. The fact that you may have somehow
contributed to your injury does not mean you cannot seek some
recovery.
Will
you suffer lifelong effects from your injury?
Injuries can be temporary or permanent in nature. While some
injuries heal and victims are able to move on with their lives,
those with permanent injuries never get back to the way they
were before their injury. If you have been told by a doctor
that you have a permanent injury, or if you believe your injury
may be permanent, talk to a lawyer about how this changes
your options for recovery.
And
remember: Never sign any release or other document
you are presented with until you have consulted with an attorney
about what that document means and what you may be giving
up if you sign it.
